What to except at your initial chiropractic visit?

Welcome to Active Health Chiropractic! We are a local Burlington, family-oriented clinic, specializing on empowering our clientele to take control of their own well-being and overall health.

Whether you are thinking of booking an initial visit, have already booked, or are just generally curious about the process, we are going to lay out the basics of what to expect and how you can optimize your chiropractic results. Generally, chiropractic visits are hard to determine how long you will be here for since every visit is personalized to your care needs. You can expect, at the initial visit, to be at the clinic for 45 minutes.

First step! Book your appointment with one of our doctors. If you would prefer to meet your new doctor before getting treated, we offer complimentary consultations. These fifteen-minute appoints are a good opportunity to meet your doctor and address any questions or concerns you may have. Call one of our friendly staff members today to book your appointment. (905) 335-5955

Second step! Patient history forms. In order to help you, it is critical for our doctors to understand you. To save time, you can find our new patient forms on our website (or see below) to fill out ahead of time, print, and bring to your appointment. If you would rather fill out the forms at the clinic, please arrive 10-15 minutes before your appointment. Where is the pain? When did the pain start? Does the pain interrupt certain aspects of your daily life? These are the types of questions asked to understand the discomfort you may be feeling. Before your appointment, your doctor will thoroughly look over notes and this is where the comprehensive, personalized treatment plan begins! The following may be asked by your chiropractor...

- Personal and family medical history

- Major illnesses

- Surgeries or operations you have had

- Medications you might be taking

- Diet and exercise

- Your work and leisure activities

- Your sleeping habits

* Wear comfortable clothes and shoes for your first visit *

* If you have previous x-rays, please bring those *

Third step! You will be welcomed by a member of our team and shown your treatment room. Our comfortable, cozy rooms are cleaned after every patient with medical-grade sanitation. Take a look around the room when you are there, each room is personalized to each doctor, this is a fun way to get a look into their personalities! Your doctor will follow you into the room shortly after and the conversation will begin.

During your initial visit, the doctor will thoroughly discuss the concern and explain the diagnosis, along with the treatment plan. These assessments give the chiropractor a better picture of your complete health. If your chiropractor diagnoses a problem better treated by another health care professional, he or she will make an appropriate referral. Otherwise, your chiropractor will focus on the specific cause of your back pain.

This usually involves:

- Listening to you describe your pain and symptoms

- Using his or her hands to locate the exact problem in your back

- Testing how far you can move in the problem area

- Determining if other parts of your back or body are affected by the problem

During your appointment, your doctor may perform some of the following tests...

- A check of your blood pressure, pulse, and coordination

- A check of your reflexes

- A test of your muscle strength, flexibility, and coordination

- Analysis of your posture

- X-ray of your spine

- Analysis of your movement

Our doctors believe every patient is unique, no one treatment works for everyone, so they will take the time to understand your life and how a plan can be best catered to your needs. One of the most important parts of this visit is talking. They strive for you to genuinely understand what may be causing the concern and how you can take steps to help yourself along this journey. Journey, meaning treatment may not be linear. After your initial visit, subsequent visits may be set up to carry out the course of help. However, your doctor will give you advice for at-home self-care. This can range anywhere from ice to heat and/or specific stretches.

If you are recommended at-home stretches, Active Health has a YouTube channel where you can find step-by-step instructions to perform these movements for safe, reliable use.

Generally, there are three levels of care. Relief care, corrective care, and maintenance/ preventative care. Your doctor will inform you during your first appointment when you should come back, this will depend on the type of care needed.

Relief care: is provided for immediate pain and discomfort. Depending on the diagnosis, your age, and physical condition, one visit, or several visits over a relatively short period of time may be necessary.

Corrective care: treats long-term spinal problems. These problems have existed for some time and hence require a longer, more complex period of care, which may include a customized exercise program.

Maintenance/ preventative care: helps you maintain and enjoy the benefits you've achieved from relief and corrective care. Continuing to work with your chiropractor and having adjustments once in a while will keep your spine as healthy as possible.

After your appointment, your doctor will advise when you should come in for your next follow-up. Our friendly staff at the front desk will assist you with finding a time that works for you and your busy schedule. If you have extended health coverage, we can email you a statement to send directly to your insurance company.
